The Echo Dot 5th Gen looks identical to the 4th — same fabric ball, same size — but the changes inside matter more than the looks suggest. Amazon added a temperature sensor, ultrasonic motion detection, a noticeably better speaker, and made it a Matter controller over Bluetooth LE Mesh (Android app setup for now; iOS support was still pending when the listing was last checked).
The speaker is the part most people will notice first. The 1.73-inch front-firing driver won't fill a large living room, but vocals come through clearer than the 4th Gen and bass holds together at normal volume. For a bedroom, kitchen or study, that's plenty.
The sensors are the underrated bit, especially in India. Pair the Dot with a smart plug and a non-smart AC or fan, and one routine can switch them on when the room crosses a set temperature. Motion detection triggers on someone walking in — not on you sitting at a desk.
Three things to know before buying: there's no Zigbee radio (only the full-size Echo 4th Gen has it), no 3.5mm output, and voice commands work in both English and Hindi. At Rs 5,499 it's the most complete small Echo yet — just don't expect it to replace a hub.

Is the Echo Dot 5th Gen worth it over the 4th Gen?
Yes, if you want either of the two new sensors: temperature and motion. Both enable Alexa routines (turn on AC when hot, turn on light when you enter) that aren't possible on the 4th Gen. If you only want basic voice and music, the 4th Gen is fine and often cheaper. The 5th Gen speaker is also slightly better, but the difference is subtle.
Does the Echo Dot 5th Gen have a Zigbee hub?
No. The Echo Dot 5th Gen does NOT have a Zigbee radio. It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy Mesh, and Matter controller support. Zigbee is only in the full-size Echo (4th Gen and newer), not the Dot. If you have Zigbee-only devices like older Philips Hue bulbs, you still need the Hue Bridge or another Zigbee hub.
What's the difference between Echo Dot 5th Gen and Echo Pop?
The Echo Pop is the cheaper, smaller sibling. It has the same voice capability but no temperature sensor, no motion detection, and a smaller, less capable speaker. The Echo Dot 5th Gen is the better pick if you care about sound quality or want to use the sensors for routines.
Does it really cut the microphone when I press the mute button?
